Solix Biofuels shipping algae – based biofuel

Solix Biofuels is producing a steady stream of algae-based biofuel from its six-month old demonstration facility.

Solix, which developed a process using photo-bioreactors to make algae-based biofuel and chemicals, is sending the biofuel to potential partners for testing,CEO Henston said.

Solix developed AGS Technology, a photo-bioreactor that contains closed chambers to support algae growth. The chamber optimizes illumination levels for five times the surface level exposure to sunlight than open ponds, the company says. In addition, the technology circulates algae within the chamber using controlled turbulence in order to maximize the photosynthesis and algae growth.

The system can consume greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide and NOx, as well as wastewater. Solix says its AGS Technology provides a controlled environment to cultivate oil-rich microalgae, enabling the production of biocrude, green diesel, biojet, biodiesel and chemical intermediates.

One advantage of Solix’s technology is that it’s species agnostic, Henston said. It can use multiple strains of algae to produce oil, but only one strain at a time. That gives flexibility to potential licensors to use native species, no matter where they’re located, he said.
